Michael Vick, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, continues to stir controversy whatever he does. Vick was due to appear on Oprah for an interview scheduled to air next week. But just before shooting he decided not to appear for personal reasons.
The idea of Vick appearing on the show stirred a lot of controversy among Oprah Winfrey fans. Some fans welcomed the interview but many felt that he does not belong on the show. They see a tradition of people who inspire by doing good and don’t feel that Vick fits that mold. They don’t think his actions deserve being rewarded with all that free publicity.
Many are still upset about Dallas awarding Vick the key to the city over Superbowl weekend. They feel honors like that are reserved for philanthropists and other charitable or noble acts. As one protester bluntly put it Michael Vick is a convicted felon who is still on probation and does not deserve such an honor.
Vick was convicted of involvement in an interstate dog fighting ring in 2007 and served 21 months in prison before returning to pro football in 2009. Even then there were many that thought he should not be allowed to play again. His crimes seem to still be fresh on the minds of many Americans and the stigma follows him around everywhere he goes even to this day.
