Bowflex SelectTech 1090 – Bowflex 1090 Dumbbells Review

Bowflex SelectTech 1090The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 is a very popular adjustable dumbbell. How does it perform? Is it worth the money? How does it compare to the competition? Read my Bowflex 1090 Dumbbells Review and find out before you buy.

The most important factor to consider before buying Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells, or any adjustable dumbbell set, is how much weight you will be using in your workouts.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells are very popular sellers on Amazon but at 52 pounds each they will be too light for serious weight trainers.

They are great for shaping and toning but with proper training your strength will increase and they will not be heavy enough for many compound exercises like squats or bench presses. So it is important to choose a dumbbell set that you won’t quickly outgrow.

At 90 pounds each the Bowflex 1090 should meet the needs of most home weight trainers.

How Do Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells Work?

This video will give a good overview of Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells so you can see them in action. It’s hard to judge if they are right for you from just a catalog picture.

bowflex selectech how it worksBasically you just turn a dial to the weight you want and an inner cam locks the appropriate plates in place.

It may sound complicated but it is really a pretty simple and straightforward system as you can see from the image on the left.

You need to place these dumbbells in their included stand to adjust the weight on them.

This adjustable dumbbell set is compact and a real space saver, replacing 17 pairs of traditional dumbbells.

You can increase the weight in 5 pound increments on these dumbbells.

If you are used to noisy old style dumbbells you will find these very quiet with no clanging plates to distract you.

Customer Reviews

These are very popular adjustable dumbbells with over 300 customer reviews on Amazon. They have a 4.4 out of 5 star rating too. Most buyers are very happy with them obviously but there are some negative reviews too. When you are going to drop a chunk of change on a set of expensive adjustable dumbbells you want to make sure they are going to perform well.

One issue that really concerns me is safety and there are claims that the plates fall off during use. I always read negative reviews on products to get a full picture. Sometimes bad reviews are placed by competitors but in this case I want to post what I believe is a sincere review.

I was very excited about these dumbells because they seem like they are well engineered and they are very quick to use. I bought two sets, one for my office and one for my home.

Like many other people have noted in their reviews, these weights are not very durable and seem to break easily. If you are going to design a set of weights that go up to 90 lbs you should think about durability. After I do a bench press I get the weights as close as possible to the 4 foam mats that are one inch thick each and then drop them the remaining 5-6 inches. I bought that padding so that I could easily reach the floor without dropping these weights because they do seem fragile. I don’t know how you could be more gentle than that, however on one occasion I set the weight on the mat, and I heard a click and the biggest plate fell off. I don’t know how you could do a bench set and then at the end be able to do anything with the dumbells without dropping them a short distance.

The largest plate on mine now falls off routinely. I’ve had it barely miss my foot several times. The way they are designed the plates can’t fall off during a bench press or shoulder press (as long as you pick them up correctly) because the weights are U shaped and rest on top of a solid bar. So in that regard they aren’t super dangerous. However when you rotate the weights after a bench press set or doing an exercise like curls they will fall off then. It’s your feet you need to worry about.

The most important thing is that bowflex could easily just send me the two pieces I need to fix the weights, however they want me to ship the weights to get repaired. I can’t imagine shipping these and won’t do it.

I give this product a one star because I can’t imagine how you could design a set of weights this heavy which are supposed to be designed for weight lifting and not make them more durable. Source: Amazon customer reviews

I must admit this is a troubling review and it is not the only one. I promised that this website would give honest workout equipment reviews and with that in mind I really don’t recommend purchasing the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells without doing your own due diligence.

Instead I recommend taking a look at the Power Block Elite 50 They cost about half as much and you can expand them to 70, 90 or 130 lbs each. You can also read my PowerBlock Elite 50 – Adjustable Dumbbells Reviews for more info.
